TINY PLANETS

We're tiny planets
moving in bodies of dirty water
that breathe fire
My neighbor went to the river
to catch a couple of rainbows
but became fascinated by the way
the sunlight ripples on the water
& never got to use his line

Thoughts build up like a dam
that holds back your life
We have names for everything
we don't have to experience
Beauty isn't something pretty
It's the spark of our undoing
It exposes our ignorance
by rubbing our faces
in what we've been ignoring

Beauty strikes before you can
get your guard up
Senseless beauty rushes in
& connects you to something
you never had in mind
like that spider web
catching the sun in the corner
or those swirling clouds of birds outside
Thoughts arrive too late to tell us
how long we've been out of time

We're tiny planets that orbit
each other in longing
looking for a way to express our love
Our boundaries become blurred
like a barn swallow speeding past us
is blurred to the insect it catches
If you've got nothing to leave
